I was looking at the following article:<br><br><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/information-protection\/rms-client\/protected-pdf-readers#viewing-protected-pdfs-in-microsoft-edge-on-windows-or-mac\" target=\"_blank\">Which PDF readers are supported for protected PDFs?<\/a><\/strong><br><br>This article said that the later versions of the Edge Browser should natively be able to open and view MIP UL Protected PDF documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-10.png 890w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-10-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-10-768x481.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>So I proceeded to do a Edge browser check on my Windows 10 test machine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"367\" height=\"176\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-11.png 367w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-11-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><figcaption>Approved Version 86 of Edge<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Great! I should be able to protect a PDF file as Confidential, and then be able to open it in Edge with no other software required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This was NOT the case.<\/strong><br><br>I protected the PDF:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-300x106.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-768x272.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>File set to Confidential Label<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I waited a few minutes and then tried to open the file. <strong>I received the following error:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"458\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-1.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-1-300x172.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-1-768x440.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>I received a permissions error and not the standard blocking error<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue with this error is that I did not receive the standard issued AIP Protection error that you should get like you would when opening a protected document without the proper plug-in with Adobe Reader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"777\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-2.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-2-300x291.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-2-768x746.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The error in Edge said to check ownership permissions, which I did:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"167\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-3.jpeg 671w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-3-300x75.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><figcaption>Amy C. Carlson is my test user for this scenario.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I could also go back into the AIP\/MIP client and remove the Confidential label from the file. So, I was puzzled at this point. I then proceeded to install Adobe Reader DC and the AIP Plug-In as described in the original article.<br><br><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/acrobat\/kb\/mip-plugin-download.html\" target=\"_blank\">Download MIP Adobe Plug-In<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once that was completed, I was able to logon as the account, open the document in Adobe Reader DC <strong>AND<\/strong> in Edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-12-1024x443.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-12-1024x443.png 1024w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-12-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-12-768x333.png 768w, https:\/\/itblog.ldlnet.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image-12.png 1143w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>File opened successfully after installing the plug-in<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the article, you should not need the plug in or any other product to open the protected file in Edge after protection is applied. Has anyone else experienced this issue and can explain why the article is not doing as said.
